Emergency surgery for a child with a femur fracture due to a traffic accident.

Recently, the Pediatric Surgery Department at Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital successfully performed surgery on a case of a child with a femur fracture due to a traffic accident.

The patient, N.T.Đ, a 14-year-old living in An Duong district, Hai Phong, was brought to Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital by his family after a motorcycle-car accident. Following the accident, the child experienced headaches, nausea, along with swelling and pain in the right thigh, inability to move, and a wound on the right hand. Upon examination and testing, the doctors diagnosed the child with multiple injuries from the traffic accident: a closed displaced fracture in the upper third of the right femur, a fracture of the right tibial plateau, a complex wound on the wrist and right hand (with a severed flexor tendon of the ulnar wrist, and a tear of the flexor sheath of the right third and fourth fingers), and a traumatic brain injury (subarachnoid hemorrhage in the frontal lobe).

After the examination, the doctors from the Pediatric Surgery Department and BSCKI. Nguyen Do Hung – Head of the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department, convened an emergency hospital consultation and indicated surgery for the patient N.T.Đ. It was anticipated that this was a case of complex and severe injury, making anesthesia in a child with a traumatic brain injury extremely challenging. After the consultation, the surgery was carried out by the doctors from the Pediatric Surgery Department along with the anesthesia team. The team performed surgery to fix the femur, tibial plateau, and repair the tendon for the patient. After 2 hours, with experience…With extensive experience and high professional skills, the surgery was successfully performed. Post-operative, after 7 days of treatment in the Pediatric Surgery Department, the child’s health stabilized and was discharged.

Femur fracture or shaft fracture of the femur is a serious injury that occurs when the structure of the femur is disrupted due to external force. This condition not only causes pain and blood loss but also significantly limits the mobility of joints such as the hip and knee, thereby severely affecting the quality of life of the patient.

Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital is constantly striving to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment, pioneering the application of new methods and modern medical equipment, to help pediatric patients recover quickly and return to a healthy, normal life.
