Biological glue injection – A new minimally invasive treatment method for children with vesicoureteral reflux.

Vesicoureteral reflux is a fairly common condition in children, where urine flows backward from the bladder into the ureters, increasing the risk of urinary tract infections and potentially leading to serious kidney problems if not treated properly. Previously, treatment for vesicoureteral reflux included antibiotics to prevent infections and surgical methods to correct mechanical issues of the urinary system. As one of the first units in the city to implement the biological glue injection method, the Pediatric Surgery Department at Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital recently successfully treated a 1-year-old patient, P.M.K, with bilateral vesicoureteral reflux using this method. The patient was admitted with recurrent urinary tract infections despite being regularly treated with prophylactic antibiotics. After examination, the doctors performed a cystoscopy on the child and administered the biological glue injection to address the reflux. Post-surgery, the patient’s health stabilized, and they were discharged.

The advantage of biological glue injection is that the surgery is performed through endoscopy of the lower urinary tract with a small scope, causing less pain and minimal invasion into the child’s body, allowing for quick recovery and early discharge from the hospital. Compared to traditional methods such as surgery or medication, biological glue injection not only minimizes risks and recovery time but also provides long-lasting results.
