Whooping cough outbreak warning: Parents should pay close attention to their children.
Whooping cough is an acute infectious disease that can spread rapidly through the respiratory tract. It can occur at any age, but it is most common and dangerous in newborns. If not detected early and treated promptly, the disease can lead to serious complications.
Recently, the Tropical Diseases Department of Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital has successfully received and treated many pediatric patients with whooping cough. A notable case is that of a 1.5-month-old patient, H.T.A, living in Kien Thuy district, Hai Phong city, who was admitted to the hospital due to coughing for several days, experiencing 10-15 coughing fits a day, with each fit lasting 1-2 minutes, a severe cough that caused facial flushing and mild cyanosis, and during coughing, the child expelled thick mucus. The child did not improve after taking medication at home, so the family immediately brought the child to the hospital for treatment. After 8 days of treatment and dedicated care from the medical team, the child’s health improved significantly, and they were discharged from the hospital.
In the case of patient A, the doctors recommend: Whooping cough can occur at any age; however, more than 90% of cases are in children under 1 year old who have not been vaccinated or have not received all 3 basic doses. The younger the child, the more severe the disease and the more complications arise. Whooping cough can cause dangerous complications such as pneumonia, respiratory failure, circulatory failure, etc., which can easily lead to death in newborns and young children. Therefore, getting vaccinated fully according to the vaccination schedule is the most effective method of prevention. As soon as there are signs of the disease, parents need to take the child to a reputable medical facility for timely examination to have appropriate and correct treatment.
