The journey of “finding a child” and the “challenging” childbirth of a woman with infertility due to a “huge” uterine fibroid.

Uterine fibroids during pregnancy is a condition that occurs in many women, affecting the health of both the fetus and the pregnant mother. The fibroid tumors are formed from tissues and muscle fibers in the uterus, and they are benign in nature due to the influence of estrogen. However, if not detected and treated, these tumors can grow large and compress other organs. Uterine fibroids during pregnancy can lead to many dangerous complications such as infertility, miscarriage, difficult labor, and even pose a risk of death. Recently, Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital successfully performed surgery on a patient with a “huge” uterine fibroid mass causing compression.

Ms. H.T.H, 31 years old from Kien An, Hai Phong, has gone through an unforgettable journey of pregnancy and childbirth in her life. Ms. H and her husband sought help from the Reproductive Support Center at Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital with a burning desire to “find a child” after a long period of infertility. After examination and ultrasound, Dr. NT.Dr. CKI Do Diem Huong discovered that Ms. H had 5 uterine fibroids, the largest measuring approximately 7 cm in diameter. This was also the main reason for the patient’s years of “infertility.” After evaluation, the multiple fibroids were found to be benign and completely operable. However, if surgery were performed immediately, it would take at least another year before the patient could undergo IVF. Considering the couple’s strong desire for a child and noting that the multiple fibroids had not encroached into the uterine cavity, the doctors at the Reproductive Support Center consulted and decided to proceed with the embryo transfer for Ms. H. Success came right from the first embryo transfer, and the whole family was overwhelmed with happiness, counting down the days until they could hear their child’s first cry. Due to the presence of multiple uterine fibroids, Ms. H was closely monitored and treated at the Prenatal Department of the hospital. By the 38th week of pregnancy, Ms. H was admitted to the hospital due toSigns of abdominal pain.

After examination and ultrasound, the results showed that the fibroid mass had grown significantly, with the largest mass reaching a diameter of 10 cm. Dr. Pham Thi Xuan Minh – Head of the Obstetrics Department immediately invited Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Viet Phuong – Director of the Obstetrics Specialty to consult and decided to perform a cesarean section while simultaneously removing the fibroid mass, ensuring safety for both the mother and the fetus.

The surgery was conducted under the direct supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Viet Phuong – Director of the Obstetrics Specialty, along with Dr. Vu Hong Thang – Obstetrics Department and the anesthesia team. This was a rather complex surgery as it required the simultaneous execution of two stages: delivering the baby and removing the fibroid mass. With extensive experience and high technical expertise, after two hours of dedicated effort, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Viet Phuong and the team successfully delivered the baby to meet the mother and completely removed the fibroid mass, while preserving the uterus for the mother H so that she could continue to give birth.

Post-surgery, the mother and baby continued to be monitored and cared for in the Postpartum department. After 7 days, mother H and the baby were stable and discharged in the joy of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Viet Phuong – Director of the Obstetrics Specialty, Dr. Vu Hong Thang – Prenatal Department, and the collective of doctors and nurses from the Obstetrics Department of Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital.

Reflecting on the past time, mother H could not help but feel emotional: “The time we have gone through is truly indescribable in words for my husband and me. Perhaps without the companionship of the doctors and nurses of the Hospital, my family would not have been able to welcome our little angel and overcome so many difficulties. Honestly, our family is very grateful and appreciative of the Hospital.” The complete results achieved are thanks to the close cooperation and connection between the specialties of the Hospital. The happy beginning is the Reproductive Support department, which nurtures and helps that hope bear “sweet fruit,” which is the Obstetrics department.
