The patient, P.V.D, a 9-year-old boy from Hai Duong province, was brought to Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital by his family due to chest pain, difficulty breathing, and an injury to his right arm after a traffic accident. Upon examination and testing, the doctors diagnosed the child with closed chest trauma, pulmonary contusion, a fracture of the right 5th rib, pneumothorax – hemothorax in the pleural cavity, subcutaneous emphysema in the chest wall, and a wound on the inner surface of the middle third of the right arm. Immediately, the Pediatric Surgery Department doctors held a consultation and indicated surgery for patient D.<\/p>\n
The surgery was performed by Specialist Doctor I Nguyen Tien Thanh, Doctor Mai Chi Thanh, along with the anesthesia team. The team performed a minimal pleural cavity drainage, debridement, and local flap transfer to cover the wound for the child. After one hour, with high expertise combined with skilled techniques, the surgery was successful. Postoperatively, after 7 days of treatment in the Pediatric Surgery Department, the child’s health stabilized, and he was discharged from the hospital.<\/p>\n

The leading cause of blunt chest trauma is motor vehicle accidents, accounting for approximately 50 – 75%. The mechanism that causes the injury is the change in speed and pressure from the outside onto the chest wall, leading to shear forces that tear blood vessels and rupture organs within the thoracic cavity. If not treated promptly, it poses a threat to the patient’s life.
