The disease primarily spreads through the respiratory route when in contact with droplets from an infected person during coughing or sneezing. Additionally, the disease can be transmitted indirectly through contact with objects contaminated with nasal secretions from the infected person. The disease can also be transmitted through contact with skin lesions caused by diphtheria.

Clinical symptoms when infected with diphtheria:

Sore throat, nasal inflammation, laryngitis; rapid appearance of a grayish-white or gray pseudomembrane around the inflamed tissue, which bleeds when removed.

Red throat, painful swallowing.

Pale skin, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes under the jaw causing swelling in the neck area.

Dangerous complications:

Myocarditis, very poor prognosis, high mortality rate.

Nerve inflammation leading to paralysis of the ocular motor nerves, limb muscles, and diaphragm.

Conjunctivitis.

Respiratory failure due to airway obstruction.

Diphtheria spreads very quickly, has dangerous complications, and especially has a high mortality rate. The disease can occur at any age but is mostly found in children under 15 years old who have not been vaccinated. Therefore, both children and adults can effectively prevent the disease by getting vaccinated fully and on schedule. The diphtheria vaccine plays a very important role in protecting the body from infection and reducing the incidence of the disease in the general population. Currently, there are vaccines available for preventing diphtheria for both children and adults:

Tetraxim vaccine for the prevention of diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, and polio for children up to 13 years old.

6in1 vaccine including Hexaxin, Infanrix for children under 2 years old.

Boostrix, Adacel vaccines for the prevention of diphtheria, whooping cough, and tetanus for adults.

Vaccination Center, Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital – Comprehensive protection for your family’s health:

A team of doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff trained formally, systematically, with extensive experience and vaccination safety certificates, qualified to conduct examinations, consultations, and vaccinations.

At the vaccination center, there is a post-vaccination reaction handling room equipped with full facilities according to the standards of health authorities.

The center has a Customer Support Hotline for post-vaccination reactions, closely following the guidelines for special cases.

Contact us now at HOTLINE: 0225.395.0139/ 0225.395.9999 or inbox our fanpage for detailed consultation about the vaccination services at the Vaccination Center – Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital!

Diphtheria is an infectious and toxic disease, transmitted via the respiratory route and capable of causing outbreaks, caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae.
