Young children are the most vulnerable group that can suffer severe complications when infected due to their still immature immune system. Recognizing the symptoms of dengue fever in children will help parents proactively prevent this disease.

The first symptom is a sudden high fever, lasting from 2 to 7 days, accompanied by manifestations such as flushed face, petechiae, muscle pain, joint pain, and headache.

In some cases, children may have a fever accompanied by sore throat, conjunctivitis, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. Infants may also show symptoms of cough, runny nose, or diarrhea. At this time, the symptoms of dengue fever in children are often nonspecific and cannot be distinguished from infections caused by other types of viruses.

Appearance of petechiae (red spots that do not disappear when the skin is stretched) often on the forearms, lower legs, armpits, chest, and lower back; mucosal bleeding such as nosebleeds, bleeding gums, and blood in stool. These bleeding symptoms are less common in the early days.

From the 3rd to the 7th day of the illness, the child begins to have a fever reduction to about 37.5 – 38 degrees Celsius or lower. Some patients exhibit symptoms of dengue fever such as lethargy, fatigue, frequent vomiting, abdominal pain, mucosal bleeding, enlarged liver, or in some cases progress to dengue shock with manifestations of cold hands and feet, weak rapid pulse, and blood pressure that is low or undetectable.

There are some patients on the 6th or 7th day of the illness who have no fever and are recovering, eating well, but especially develop itchy rashes on their hands and feet, causing parents to worry and take the child to the hospital, but doctors explain that this is part of the recovery process.

To prevent the risk of dengue fever in children, parents need to:

Remember the signs of dengue fever in children to promptly take them for examination and treatment.

Clean and maintain hygiene in the home, rooms, and surrounding areas to eliminate mosquito breeding environments.

Eliminate larvae and regularly spray for mosquitoes.

Use mosquito nets when sleeping, apply mosquito repellent cream or oil for children.
