Flu B in young children: Signs and ways to prevent the disease

Influenza B in children is a respiratory infectious disease caused by the influenza B virus. Typically, children infected with influenza B will recover on their own; however, the virus can also lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, myocarditis, encephalitis, rhabdomyolysis, multi-organ failure… either due to the influenza virus or secondary bacterial infections.

Recently, there have been many cases of severe influenza B requiring mechanical ventilation. Young children are particularly susceptible to influenza B and can progress to severe illness. Therefore, early recognition of influenza B is essential for treatment, preventing the risk of complications, and the need for mechanical ventilation. Below are important signs to recognize influenza B that parents should pay attention to:
- Sudden high fever: This is one of the most common symptoms of influenza B. If a child has a sudden and prolonged high body temperature, this may be a warning sign of influenza B.
- Cough: The child may have a persistent cough, sometimes dry or productive.
- Sore throat: The child may experience a sore throat, affecting their ability to eat and drink.
- Muscle and joint pain: The child may complain of muscle and joint pain or show discomfort through body language.
How to prevent influenza B in young children:
- Maintain a minimum distance of 1 meter from individuals showing symptoms of the flu.
- Wash hands regularly with soap and water or hand sanitizer before touching the eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Use tissues when coughing and sneezing, and dispose of tissues in the trash.
- Clean surfaces and tools that are frequently touched.
- Do not allow children to share items such as drinking cups, spoons, toys, etc. If a child shows symptoms of the flu, take them to a medical facility for examination, adhere to isolation, and treatment.
Influenza B in children is a benign disease; however, in children with weakened immune systems (young children, children with underlying conditions, etc.), the disease can progress with many dangerous complications, potentially leading to death. Early recognition of the signs in children with Influenza B will help parents detect their child’s condition early, allowing for appropriate and timely care and treatment, ensuring the child’s safety.
