Laparoscopic anal reconstruction surgery for a 2-month-old child

Recently, the Pediatric Surgery Department – Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital successfully performed laparoscopic surgery on a case of a child born without an anus.
The patient, V.H.M.T, a 2-month-old infant from Hai Phong, has a history of congenital anus atresia. Admitted from the neonatal stage, the Pediatric Surgery doctors of the hospital performed the first surgery to create a temporary stoma on the abdominal wall for baby T. After the creation of the artificial anus, the patient was scheduled for surgery to reconstruct the anus in the correct position.
The surgery was conducted by BSCKII. Nguyen Duy Tuan – Head of the Pediatric Surgery Department, BSCKI. Hoang Van Quynh along with the anesthesia team. The team performed a rectal pouch descent and anus reconstruction, dissecting around the rectal pouch, making a cross-shaped incision through the remnants of the anus, and pulling the rectal pouch down to the perineum, suturing the mucosa of the rectal pouch to the skin. After 3 hours, the surgery was successful. Postoperatively, the patient’s health was stable and they were discharged.

Most importantly, effective management, monitoring, and treatment of the patient after surgery are crucial for normal bowel function, ensuring a good quality of life for the child throughout their future life.
With a team of experienced doctors and modern facilities and equipment, the Pediatric Surgery Department – Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital has successfully operated on many cases of children born without an anus. Through the case of patient T, the doctors also advise families to monitor the child’s bowel and urinary issues immediately after birth; if any abnormal signs are observed within 24 hours, the child should be taken to medical facilities for timely examination and treatment.
