Bilateral double renal and ureteral malformation in a 3-month-old patient was detected and successfully operated on at Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital.
The patient D.N.D from Thuy Nguyen, Hai Phong has a rare congenital anomaly: bilateral duplicated kidneys and ureters. Specifically, Baby D. has a total of four kidneys and four ureters, while a normal person has only two kidneys and two ureters.
According to BSCKI. Hoang Van Quynh – specialist in urology: Kidney anomalies are quite rare with an incidence of 0.2 – 0.4%. The cause is due to the embryo having two ureter buds on each side or a single ureter bud that is split. Female patients are twice as common as males, with the right side being equal to the left. The condition often presents with urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence, and ureteral prolapse in females at the urethral opening, with 60% detected prenatally through ultrasound.
It is known that patient D was discovered and diagnosed with bilateral double renal-ureteral malformation by the pediatric surgery department when he was just over one month old. The patient’s two kidneys and right ureter are partially duplicated in a Y-shape, functioning normally within limits. The two kidneys and left ureter are fully duplicated, but the lower end of the upper ureter of the left double kidney is obstructed and does not connect to the bladder, creating a ureteral cyst protruding into the bladder. In the case of this patient, surgery is the optimal method. However, at that time, due to the patient being too small, the doctor advised the family to wait a little longer before proceeding with the surgery. By the time the patient was 3 months old, under the direction of Dr. Pham Thu Xanh – Executive Director of Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, the pediatric surgery and anesthesia team performed a surgery to preserve the healthy kidney unit for patient D.
