Emergency rescue saves a 9-year-old boy with multiple serious injuries after a traffic accident.

Doctors at Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital have successfully performed a complex emergency surgery, saving the life of a 9-year-old boy who suffered severe multiple injuries after a traffic accident, in a state of hemorrhagic shock with a high risk of death.

The patient was brought to the hospital in critical condition with multiple severe injuries: severe abdominal pain, deformed left arm, pale skin and mucous membranes. Clinical examination and imaging diagnosis revealed that the boy had a grade V splenic rupture – the most severe level, causing massive bleeding in the abdominal cavity, along with a displaced fracture of the mid-shaft of the left humerus with loose fragments. This was a complex multiple injury situation, rapidly progressing and directly threatening the child’s life.

Immediately, the hospital activated the multi-trauma emergency response process, mobilizing the coordinated efforts of multiple specialties. The child was given intensive resuscitation, blood transfusions, and blood products to stabilize hemodynamics, while an emergency consultation was organized to devise the optimal and safest treatment plan.

A highlight of the treatment was the implementation of surgery with two parallel surgical teams, which helped to minimize the “golden hour” for saving the child.

The Pediatric Surgery team quickly performed an emergency splenectomy to control bleeding and stabilize the overall condition.

Immediately after, the Orthopedic Trauma team performed closed reduction of the left humerus under the guidance of a modern C-arm system. This minimally invasive method, with an incision of only 1–2cm, does not open the fracture site, helping to limit soft tissue damage, reduce blood loss, shorten surgery time, and facilitate the recovery process afterwards.

Thanks to the smooth and precise coordination among the specialties and the application of advanced surgical techniques, the surgery was conducted safely and successfully. Postoperatively, the patient was closely monitored and actively treated in the Pediatric Surgery department, with overall condition stabilizing quickly and no complications reported. After a period of inpatient treatment, the child recovered well and was discharged amidst the joy of the family and the medical team.

According to doctors, severe multiple injuries in children are a major challenge, requiring hospitals to have a well-organized emergency system, a team of experienced doctors, and the ability to coordinate closely across multiple specialties. The application of minimally invasive surgical techniques not only helps save patients’ lives but also contributes to pain reduction, minimizes trauma, shortens recovery time, and enhances the quality of life for children after treatment.
