Overcoming the “door of death” right at birth – A 2-day-old newborn with congenital intestinal obstruction and neonatal infection was saved at Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital.
Recently, the doctors at Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital successfully performed an emergency surgery on a 2-day-old premature newborn suffering from congenital intestinal obstruction, neonatal infection, with a poor prognosis.
The patient is the daughter of mother P. T. H (a resident of Tien Lang) who was born prematurely at just 37 weeks and 3 days; after birth, the infant had infrequent bowel movements, white stool consistency, and vomited greenish dirty fluid, leading to intensive care at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with a diagnosis of congenital intestinal obstruction monitoring.
The infant was given an enema and many white particles were observed; the gastrointestinal transit imaging results indicated that the child had intestinal obstruction. Through a specialist consultation, the doctors assessed this as a difficult surgery for a newborn weighing 2800g. However, it was necessary to decide on an emergency surgery to clear the obstructed intestine, to prevent intestinal necrosis and rapid systemic infection.
During the surgery, the doctors diagnosed the infant with meconium ileus with complications of enteritis, which is a serious complication. The team proceeded to clean the obstructed segment of the intestine (removing meconium, relieving the obstruction); instead of resecting the inflamed segment of the intestine, the doctors decided to preserve and conservatively treat the inflamed segment to ensure long-term digestive function for the baby.A temporary exit (colostomy) is created on the abdomen so that the baby can defecate, helping the intestines to recover and preventing infection.
Post-surgery, the child is given special care in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. After a period of treatment, clinical symptoms improve. The child is discharged in the joy of the family and the doctors and nurses. The baby will be monitored for regular check-ups in preparation for the closure of the colostomy in the near future.
Experts say: Congenital intestinal obstruction in newborns is a birth defect that occurs during the formation of the intestines, with a high mortality rate if not diagnosed and treated promptly.
