Successful surgery to remove a large uterine fibroid for a 53-year-old female patient.

Recently, Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital successfully performed surgery to manage a large uterine fibroid for a 53-year-old female patient.

The patient, D.T.N.H, 53 years old, residing in Cat Dai Ward, Le Chan District, Hai Phong City, had been diagnosed with uterine fibroids for many years but had not undergone surgery due to fear of pain. Upon examination, the doctors diagnosed her with a large uterine fibroid with compressive complications. Immediately, the obstetrics department doctors held a consultation and decided to perform surgery to manage the uterine fibroid for patient H.

The surgery was scheduled with preparation by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Viet Phuong – Director of the Obstetrics Specialty, who directly performed the surgery along with Dr. Pham Van Do, Dr. Nguyen Huu Trung, and the anesthesia team. The surgery took place on the morning of October 21, 2024. During the abdominal surgery, the team found the entire uterus had a large tumor weighing 3kg, consisting of multiple fibroids of varying sizes, the largest being over 20cm and the smallest 6cm. The tumor was completely removed along with the uterus and both adnexa to eliminate any risk of recurrence for patient H.

After 45 minutes of surgery, with high technical expertise and skill, the operation was completed, ensuring the patient’s safety during and after the surgery. Five days after the surgery, the patient’s health was stable and they were discharged in joy and happiness for having overcome the challenge of the major surgery. Two weeks after discharge, the patient returned for a follow-up examination, where their health was assessed to have fully recovered and they were soon able to return to all normal activities.

According to the opinions of many experts in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology: Uterine fibroids are commonly found in women with estrogen dominance from the ovaries. Most are benign tumors, but if they grow large, they can cause many complications such as menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, and prolonged menstruation, leading to anemia ranging from mild to severe, which can affect the patient’s life or cause symptoms that compress the organs in the pelvic cavity such as the bladder and rectum. Particularly, over time, they can cause adhesions with the organs, significantly reducing the quality of life, and when surgery is needed, it will be very difficult. In the case of patient H, the tumor was too large and had caused compressive complications, leading to abnormal urinary and digestive symptoms, so experts recommend that women of childbearing age, perimenopausal, and menopausal women should have regular gynecological check-ups. When abnormal signs are detected, it is necessary to go to reputable hospitals and medical facilities for timely diagnosis and treatment, avoiding prolonged illness that leads to severe complications affecting health.
