Influenza A increases danger towards the end of the year: What you need to know and preventive measures

As we enter the transitional season, the unpredictable weather is causing a decrease in immunity, making pregnant women and children particularly vulnerable to various viruses, including Influenza A.

In just the past few months, Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital has received and treated many cases of Influenza A, both outpatient and inpatient.

Experts say: Influenza A, compared to other common flu strains, presents with high fever, cough, and significant nasal discharge. Influenza A can lead to complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis, and in children under 5 years old, it can also cause complications related to otitis media. In the outpatient department, the rate of Influenza A being screened is currently high and is expected to continue to rise. Therefore, the work of examination and disease screening is extremely important, helping patients receive the correct treatment and medication, and actively supporting inpatient departments in classifying and treating patients.

Pregnant women and young children, especially those under 2 years old with weak immunity, are at high risk of infection. When symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, headache, and prolonged fatigue appear, one should not be complacent but should visit a healthcare facility for examination to avoid serious complications caused by the disease.

To proactively prevent illness, it is essential to maintain good personal hygiene: wash hands frequently, wear masks when going out, avoid large crowds, cover the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and stay home for at least 24 hours after fever subsides to prevent spreading to others.

Individuals confirmed by healthcare facilities to have Influenza A should rest, wear masks, and limit exposure to crowded places to prevent the virus from spreading to those around them. Additionally, the best way to prevent Influenza A is to receive the annual flu vaccine.
